A Rant; Woes of A Makeup Obsessed Guy.

Let me first share a picture of how I usually look like on a normal day…

I am definitely not your typical beauty blogger. I look very ordinary and I really don’t mind how I look like or how I choose to dress. If it isn’t already apparent, I am plus sized which I have made peace with. It doesn’t bother me anymore when people call me fat/overweight/obese etc (for whatever reason). I am a scientist by profession and so I need to be in comfortable clothes to be hanging around the lab with a white coat on me most of the time. Even when I am just heading to the postgraduate student room I am usually sitting in front of a laptop analysing data with intermittent YouTube videos and FiercePaint’s notifications. I don’t live in a situation for me to look a certain way for people to perceive me to know anything about makeup. The irony is I do and it is very frustrating when you’re misjudged just because you don’t prescribe to stereotypes.

Initially, I had to deal with the apprehension of entering beauty stores, looking at makeup and purchasing them just because you know people are thinking “What in the world would that big bearded man need a lipstick and an eyeliner for”. And when purchasing false eyelashes! Forget it! Having worked very hard to brush off wandering looks and judgmental grins from strangers I now deal with another situation. Pesky beauty assistants and their condescending attitudes.

Five minutes is all I ask to look through the makeup aisle at the drugstores without being approached by a sales assistant. More often then not they’d have on poorly applied foundation, horribly wonky liquid liner and lipstick application that could give a baboon’s ass a run for its money. I rarely retaliate nor do I shoot them snarky replies. First of all, they have no idea what I do or who I am and second of all, it never pays to be mean to people, even if it were just words. However you sometimes just can’t hold back.

Once, in a beauty store, (last year I think) I was looking at some lipsticks when a BA (beauty assistant), who was already following me around incessantly with a condescending look (as if I was about to steal something), started getting on my nerves.

BA ; Are you looking for lipstick?  *sees me swatching a liquid to matte lipstick* This is a lipstick, it is first liquid but it will dry and set to your lips. *shoots a condescending look when I only smile with no response* This one nice colour you wanna try? *pulls my hand with no warning and swatches it*

Me ; (at this point I was irked enough and sufficiently irritated to respond, so I did, with a calm and polite voice) Darling, I have over 40 lipsticks in my makeup collection. I do know a little bit about lipsticks.

I am never rude but it does take me a considerable amount of patience to not say anything to any of these BAs. It is worse when you’re the only one in the store they seem to be following around; monitoring almost!

Things aren’t so bad anymore these days because I have adjusted my predisposition to a more devil may care attitude. However, I do feel bad for people with genuine need for help at the makeup aisles at beauty shops and drugstores. You would think that being in the retail service industry, these assistants are taught during their assumed training period, that every customer should be treated equally.

Let’s not settle for mediocrity and ignorance shall we?

Thank you so much for sitting through this rant of mine!

I just wanted to break the saturation of product heavy posts on FiercePaint.

Thank you all so much!!!

  1. Loved this post Hari and kudos to you! I know it must’ve been difficult to do what you do, but love that you have now adopted the don’t care attitude, trust me it works best! With the skill that you have that not many people possess, you shouldn’t let anything get to you, keep doing what you are doing! Don’t even get me started about the beauty assistants, I know they are doing their job ( however badly) but honestly they should draw a line before the mere “assistance” becomes annoying! On a lighter note, happy diwali to you! 😀

    • Yes, those pesky sales assistants are a handful! I have a head full of hair and this one time a sales assistant had the audacity to try and sell me a bald remedy formula! It was one of those times I didn’t hold back and immediately responded, “What are you trying to imply? Do I look like I need hair growth formula!”
I am glad you are loving my blog and loving reading my content. Thank you so so much!!! ❤ ❤ ❤
I want to make more of an effort to write these non-product posts! I had fun writing this too!
HAPPY DIWALI to you as well!!!

  3. I think you’re a breath of fresh air in the world of beauty bloggers! I think that men’s cosmetics will one day be more more on par with women’s – I already see signs of it with the men’s skincare section in stores.
My hope is that your interest in makeup will persevere and not let some pesky BA deter you from perusing the makeup aisles!

    • Ah Stashy, your comment made my day!!! Thank you SO SO MUCH!!! ❤ ❤ ❤
You know something, we already have several skincare lines for men here! It's actually very encouraging!
I shall forever peruse the makeup aisle and if any BA tries to be snarky with me, I'll just ask her how many lipsticks she has and outdo her!!! *evil laughs*

    • You do notice that guys in the beauty industry that typically work in these beauty stores behave and dress in a certain way, which from the picture, I OBVIOUSLY don’t. There isn’t a negative or a positive connotation attached to that stereotype but I guess that’s the reason male BAs tend to give other guys that look at makeup and don’t conform to that stereotype “that look”. Am I making any sense here? Which is completely unjustified and irks me to no ends!
By the way, thank you so much for dropping by, following, liking and commenting! It’s so cool getting in touch with male bloggers interested in beauty and makeup.

  5. I have to say that most of us are someone looking completely different when we are not beauty blogging, that is what I love, I love knowing what they do outside beauty blogging. =) Good no you Hari! I am in my baggy clothing at work with bad hair, but, who cares? As long as I get my job done!

    • I think society sometimes place value judgment on things that are completely unjustified and it’s difficult to just break that kind of premature conclusions. I guess my woes will only be woes until I let it affect me and adjusting myself to being a more carefree person is essentially the best thing I’ve done in progressing with something I am passionate about.
Thanks so much! As long as we get the job done! 😀

  6. People.Just try to go with an open mind.Sometimes telling people you shop for yout sister birthday might help, because people are freakin judgemental.Or if it’s a store you shop often, tell them you are a chemist, and your job is to test makeup and give reviews.😂In time, they will forget why you even there.

  7. This post are just great! “Darling, I have over 40 lipsticks in my makeup collection. I do know a little bit about lipsticks.” —cracks me up. HAHA that’s a quote.

BTW Hari you looked so familiar, (maybe a little bit cliché) and thought that its impossible because you are in Penang. Maybe you have studied here in KL? xx

    • Awwww…. thanks Dominique! Here in Malaysia, makeup isn’t something that a lot of women have in depth knowledge on, to the point that even beauty assistants at cosmetics stores don’t know how to apply makeup properly.
I am glad I found Style Domination too! I was so pleasantly surprised when you spoke of malas and shiva lingams!
I am at a point in my life that I have learned to listen to that gut feeling inside of me. Call it God, call it intuition, but that feeling, that voice, it is now, more infallible than it has ever been and I have began experiencing a sense of composed certainty that certain decisions I make is going to make me live my life to the fullest. No regrets, and always at peace and at ease.

  8. Ohh tell me about the pesky BAs!! Just get on my nerves. Firstly they don’t have a dam idea about makeup and on top of that just push certain brands!! And go on bluffing about products.
It was a wonderful post to read. Looking forward to more of your posts!! 🙂
