MAC Viva Glam I Lipstick Review

I can’t believe I am finally reviewing a MAC product! MAC is huge in Malaysia; ask someone who knows makeup to name a high end makeup brand and MAC is perhaps the first brand they suggest.

Today I review the first ever MAC Viva Glam lipstick launched in 1994!

So for you people not in the know, the first ever MAC Viva Glam line was endorsed by Rupaul Andre Charles!!! Look it up darlings! LOOK IT UP!!!!

The outer packaging.

Ingredients list on the side of the box.

The name of the shade.

The iconic bullet shaped lipstick tube.

Isn’t that a beauty???

YASSS!!!!!! I love that red!!!!

Shade name on the bottom of the tube.

Swatch.

Description: This particular line of lipsticks comes in several shades and are always celebrity endorsed. Part of proceeds from sales of these lipsticks go the MAC AIDS Fund. MAC lipsticks come in 3 grams/0.1 oz of product. This particular shade has a matte finish.

Where to buy: MAC counters; counters are available in Penang, Pahang, Selangor, Wilayah Persekutuan, Johor, Sabah and Sarawak usually in shopping malls.

Price: MYR 78

Pros:

Smooth and easy to apply.

Very pigmented!

Very opaque!

VERY long wearing!

VERY comfortable (like you are wearing nothing on the lips).

Does NOT at ALL emphasize fine lines on the lips.

This shade in particular is very complimentary for a wide range of skin tones!

Re-application is perhaps just one swipe and done kind of deal. VERY easy!

Although not particularly moisturising, it doesn’t dry out the lips either.

Cons

Not smudge proof or transfer resistant.

Price (which isn’t that bad considering some drugstore lipsticks in Malaysia can cost up to MYR 59 and I have not met MAC’s worthy competitor although there are dupes in terms of shade and finish).

Rating:

9.6/10

STELLAR!!!!!!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *applause*

Golden Rose Velvet Matte Lipstick (12) Review

[UPDATED REVIEW]

I did a first impressions post on this particular lipstick (post here) and I got to test it out properly because I was involved in a stage play that required me to wear some makeup. Background information on the brand is on the first impressions entry.

Swatch. Pretty colour!!!

Swatch. Pretty colour!!!

Description:

It is, like its name suggests, a matte lipstick with a velvety finish unlike a completely matte lipstick. There’s 4.2 g of product in the tube and about 27 different shades available. The one featured in this review is a muted rose pink colour (VML12).

Price: MYR 27 not factoring in possible discounts and offers. Just to give you all the information, I got this lipstick as a prize for entering a competition by Colours Cosmetics Malaysia.

Where to buy: Online at Golden Rose Malaysia official website; they only ship to Malaysia but the products are available worldwide. Information is a little scattered on their Malaysian website but I do know of a store in Sunway Putra Mall, Kuala Lumpur, one in Alamanda Putrajaya, Wilayah Persekutuan and one in Sunway Carnival Mall, Seberang Jaya, Pulau Pinang.

Pros:

It is opaque.

The colour is absolutely lovely and would flatter deeper, tanned skin tones.

Lovely vanilla scent.

It is one of that swipe-once-for-colour-payoff kinda lipstick.

Goes on absolutely smooth without any tug and isn’t drying.

Comfortable on the lips.

Wide selection of shades including even deep vampy ones.

Cons:

The tube cover is not so secure.

The twist mechanism is such that it actually allows the tube to be twisted up even without opening the cover. A downside because your lipstick can accidentally twist up and smear the insides of the cover thus spoiling the lipstick.

May not work for lips with lots of lines (ok, I’ll say it, wrinkles!!! *cue horror music*). This is why it didn’t work for my wrinkled lips; upon application the lipstick looked like a dream. However, when I started moving my lips and talking, within the first half hour, the lipstick moved around and settled into every crevice and line. I was able to see vertical thin patches of lipstick across my lips every time I smiled or talked.

Not very long wearing.

It is a beautiful lipstick but I did wish it didn’t settle in the lines in my lips. I have suggested it to some friends and they absolutely love it! She chose a darker shade and the darker shades seem to be a lot better!

Maybelline Color Sensational Bold Matte Lipstick Review

[UPDATED REVIEW]

This is a review for the Color Sensational Bold Matte Lipstick and I have the shade Mat6 (Maroon Red) which is the darkest red colour in the line. There are 4 other shades in this range, Mat2 (Sugar Pink), Mat 4 (Vivid Coral), Mat5 (Bold Red), and Mat7 (Nude Beige). I would advice deep, warm, Indian skin toned people like myself to avoide Mat2 and Mat7; these two colours will wash you out! I chose this colour because a deep red colour on the lips is a common constitute of classical Indian dance makeup.

This is another picture taken in which I was wearing the lipstick. However, its tiny because this is a cropped picture from a group shot. You can still see that the lipstick is still there. This picture was taken AFTER a performance which attests to its staying power.

This is a picture taken in which I was wearing the lipstick. I apologise for the tiny picture because this is actually a group shot that I cropped. You can see that the lipstick is still there. This picture was taken AFTER a performance which attests to its staying power.

Description: It is a long lasting matte lipstick that is devoid of taste and scent. There’s 4.2g of product in it; similar to the other Color Sensational lipsticks. The shade Mat6 is a deep maroon red colour which will flatter many skin tones albeit difference in intensity. It also does not appear completely matte.

Price: Anywhere between MYR 17 to 32 depending on where you buy and factoring in discounts.

Where to buy: Anywhere there’s a Maybelline booth set up; Watsons, Guardian, Caring, Tesco, Aeon…

Pros:

It glides on smoothly and does not tug on the lips AT ALL!

Highly HIGHLY pigmented!

VERY opaque; it is a swipe-one-layer-to-get-colour-payoff kind of lipstick.

Long lasting and as you have already seen, it leaves a stain on the lips.

Comfortable on the lips.

Does not emphasize fine lines and dry patches on the lips.

Cons:

It is not smudge proof and hence will transfer.

When wearing dark lipsticks that transfer, lipstick stain on the teeth is a highly possible phenomenon, as is with this lipstick.

8.6/10

I simply LOVE this lipstick! When using it I’ll usually do the suck-a-finger trick to remove excess product from my inner lips to avoid teeth stains!

Wet n Wild MegaLast Lip Color Lipstick Review

I usually review lipsticks in single shades because consistencies may be different with each shade. However it is safe to say that these lipsticks are similar across all shades.

Today I am reviewing the Wet n Wild MegaLast Lip Color lipstick and I have three shades. I previously posted a first impressions post on this lisptick (link here). Apologies for the picture quality on that post; I was just starting out. 😛

Pros:

Very VERY pigmented!

Very VERY opaque; one swipe does it kind of lipstick.

Long lasting! VERY long lasting.

Does not emphasize fine lines on the lips.

The range of colours really deserve a mention because their deeper shades are very flattering on dark skin.

Re-application is a breeze.

Cons:

Although VERY affordable it is no where close to the 1.99 USD price tag in USA.

The lipstick tube almost immediately becomes loose and flimsy. Definitely zero points for packaging.

It does dry out the lips a tiny bit.

Not entirely comfortable on the lips (you’ll feel it on the lips).

Rating: 8/10

I love these lipsticks especially Mocha-licious. My perfect nude shade which is near impossible to find at the drugstore!

First Impression, NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream (SMLC04 London)

Although not exactly drugstore, NYX makeup brand prices are within drugstore range and NYX is the single most affordable makeup brand at Sephora.

The NYX Soft Matte Lip Creams (SMLC) has an almost cult following among the YouTube beauty community so I said hey, it’s about time I tried it out. So I picked up a nude colour that I can actually use.

My thoughts:

It is a liquid to matte lip product that dries and sets on the skin. The shade I have here is a brownish nude colour perfect for tanned skin people. It smells like dessert and I absolutely love that! It has a mousse-y texture and it is pretty long lasting. Overall I really do think this lip cream is pretty amazing. The darker colours may be trickier to work with. LOVE!!!

Price; MYR 30 (also depends your source of purchase)

Where to buy; Sephora (nationwide), FS Boutique (on mainland Penang, Facebook page link here).

First Impressions, Wet n Wild Megalast Lipstick (Smokin’ Hot Pink)

Why Harivain??? Why??? Not another lipstick!!!

Yes, I hear your cries! Please bear with me though. I WILL be moving on to more of the eyes and face makeup after this! I promise!!!

So here we go.

Wet n Wild is an American brand that produces some of the most affordable makeup products, sought after by makeup enthusiasts around the world! They produce every kind of makeup product; from eyeshadows, lipsticks, mascaras to makeup brushes and nail polish. Wet n Wild isn’t very popular in Malaysia because they hit shelves just last year (2014) and were only available online prior to that. Their products are cruelty-free which is commendable and they are available in selected Sasa stores all over Malaysia. However, they do cost a lot more here than they do back in the USA.

Although not clear, the brand name is printed across the tube cover.

My thoughts;

It is a matte hot pink lipstick and I really like it! A friend of mine used it with another lipstick to bring down its intensity and it lasted her all 4 hours before she wiped it off (granted, she was not eating). The reason I wanted to share this product is because it is a pink colour that would flatter a wide range of skin tones! With Indian, deeper warmer skin tones, darling, you can rock this pink lipstick! There isn’t a distinctive smell or taste to it but it is one of those swipe-once-to-get-colour-payoff kind of lipstick. Colour selection is also impressive. A larger Sasa outlet that carries the brand may have all 26 shades of the lisptick. YES! 26!!! There’s definitely a colour for everyone!

There are three issues with this lipstick that personally annoy me. First of all the formula is pretty thick so when applying, it does slightly tug on the lips. Second, the packaging flails after the tenth time the tube is opened and closed. The cover becomes loose, it cracks up with a lil’ rough play (no pun intended), and there isn’t a great element of design to it. Third and last is, when the lipstick is initially being used, a portion of it is not fully covered by the bottom part of the tube. This portion that protrudes out from the tube can be easily scraped by the cover when closing it.

However, all these issues aside, the lisptick itself is simply amazing! It wears well, it is opaque and colour selection is mind blowing!

It retails at MYR 21.90 at Sasa and about MYR 17 via the online store Colours Cosmetics Malaysia. However, I got it as a prize for entering a makeup competition and it is thus mine, even if I didn’t pay for it 😉 .

First Impression, Golden Rose Velvet Matte Lipstick

Golden Rose is a Turkish makeup brand, produced by Erkul Cosmetics, that hit Malaysian shores last year in December. Since they are a Turkish based company the products are Muslim-friendly. Erkul Cosmetics have been in the cosmetics business for over 30 years (founded in 1983). They have been available online for purchase at http://www.goldenrose.com.my/ since December 2014 and their products are very affordable. I got this lipstick (along with some others) as a prize for entering a contest by Colours Cosmetics Malaysia.

My thoughts:

It is a matte finish lipstick that has the distinctive vanilla scent. It is not completely matte as with the name, ‘velvet matte’. The shade I have is VML12 (it does not have a specific name) which is a lovely pink colour that will flatter many skin tones especially deep tanned Indian skin tone like mine. It is opaque, goes on smoothly and is creamy. The scent is not too overpowering. It doesn’t dry the lips out like a matte liquid lipstick does, however, it isn’t very long wearing and it is not smudge-proof.

I am loving this lipstick and it costs about MYR 23.30 (plus GST). It is dermatologically tested, paraben-free, Muslim-friendly and not tested on animals.

Makeup Suggestion; Nude Lipstick for Indian Skin Tones (Maybelline and Silkygirl)

When you are a deeper skin tone because you are Indian, finding a proper nude shade in Malaysia, in the drugstores specifically is a challenge! And when the lady at the drugstore counter shows you a nude lipstick, you swatch it and it does seem like it is nude because it matches you skin tone. So you take her word, buy it, take it home and swipe it on your lips only to realise that it is way too light!

*cue horror music*

nudeforindian

Yes, this post is for Indians out there who are looking for nude lipsticks and cannot find one that suits you. I have two great choices for you and they are both affordable although one is more affordable than the other. They go on smoothly, they won’t, dry out the lips or feel heavy.

The first one is from Maybelline, from its ColorSensational line and it is in the shade 275 (Crazy for Coffee). And the other one is from the Silkygirl, from its Moisture Smooth line and it is in the shade 05 (Dark Brown). The Maybelline one has a cake batter scent that is so good you almost want to eat it! The Silkygirl one does not have any scent. Neither has a bad taste (this is important if you tend to lick your lips a lot).

Price:

Maybelline can cost anywhere from MYR 20 to MYR 35 (for 4.2 grams of product).

The Silkygirl can cost anywhere from MYR 10 to MYR 14 (for 3.5 grams of product).

Both prices depend on where buy you it and factoring in discounts. Both brands are available in drugstores like Watsons, Guardian, Caring, and even Sasa. There is a small difference in amount of product but the Maybelline is twice the price of the Silkygirl. The Silkygirl is a close dupe for the Maybelline one (wow, I am duping drugstore products with drugstore products!!!). Always lookout for discounts!!!

Ultimately I prefer the Maybelline one over the Silkygirl one but the Silkygirl is definitely a cheaper alternative.

Below are some pictures.

IMG_9989

Both colours are so close. The only difference is the Maybelline one is slightly pink tone compared to the Silkygirl one.

Both colours are so close. The only difference is the Maybelline one is slightly pink toned compared to the Silkygirl one. And you can see how close it is to my skin tone which is good as a nude shade.

These two are merely suggestions and it may or may not work for you (even if you are similar to my skin tone), however, there is a way for you to find your own perfect nude lip shade. Instead of finding a lipstick shade that similar to your skin tone and matches your complexion, lift you lips and look at the colour of your gum. That is your perfect nude shade!

Hope this helps all you Indians out there! Happy shopping!
