Would I pay for this eyebrow pencil? A lighthearted review amidst trying times…

I know what’s up, you know what’s up. I really don’t want to bother acknowledging it because I’m assuming you’re here for makeup because you want some semblance of relief, normalcy or escapism. So let’s go!

This is my first time reviewing a Makeup Forever product. Actually spelled Make Up For Ever (seriously, look at one of yours if you have one), it was founded by a French artist turned makeup artist called Dany Sanz in 1984. It is more of a mid-range makeup brand but if MAC is high end for me, Make Up For Ever is high end too!

To disclose; I received this product as prize for winning a makeup competition by RiceDolls in collaboration with Make Up For Ever Malaysia. RiceDolls is a Malaysian beauty website featuring makeup looks from various content creators and artists (they’re most active on Twitter; handle @RiceDollsMY). Basically a network of local beauty and makeup enthusiasts.

This is the Make Up For Ever Brow Pencil Precision Brow Sculptor in 40, Dark Brown.

Where to buy:
Sephora Malaysia or Make Up Forever boutiques in Malaysia (a list of their boutiques are available on the Make Up For Ever Malaysia Facebook page)

Here is how it looks like on the brows.

“Natural”
Sharp and defined.
Korean style straight brows.

Pros:
> Long lasting.
> Easy to blend.
> Not too pigmented (in my opinion this is a good thing as too much colour can be catastrophic should a mistake be made).
> Can be sharpened to achieve precision.
> Easy to use.
> Good colour selection and a great colour match for me.
> Although priced higher, amount of product to price is very pretty good.

Cons:
> No spoolie.
> Needs sharpening (I hate it! Absolutely hate sharpening).

I already have a dupe for this which I’ve reviewed before (link to review here). They both work and apply the same. I’ll attach a YouTube video of me swatching both products.

Rating: 8.2/10
I love this product and for something of that price would actually consider repurchasing simply because there’s plenty of product. It would last pretty well. The lack of spoolie is something to consider though.

Why you need a skinny brow pencil… NYX Micro Brow

NYX is no more in Penang!!!! WHY NYX WHY???????? Please open a store here! PLEASE!!!!!!!!! Well, it’s very simply because Sephora Malaysia, which was previously the only place to get NYX products, parted ways with the brand. If you didn’t already know, I am severely averse to online shopping. So this is just annoying since one of my favourite concealers is the NYX HD Studio Photogenic Concealer (review here). But today, I bring you the NYX Micro Brow Pencil. Alluding to the title, as much as I believe you need a skinny brow pencil, is this the one? Do keep reading to find out…

The product.
This box is jam packed with descriptions!
Ingredient list.
More information.
Shade name and code.
The pencil.
Information galore! I was genuinely surprised that there are NYX products made in Korea.
Wow, they even managed to get their website printed!
The twist up part. Yes, I’ve run out of the product. I had to take it apart for a swatch.
Spoolie on the other end.
Oh how much I worked for this swatch.

Description:
A retractable brow pencil that comes in 8 shades and in 0.003oz. or 0.09g product (the 8 shade full range would depend on where you’re purchasing them from; here in Malaysia the NYX stores carry 5 shades).

Ingredients:
POLYETHYLENE, C12-15 ALKYL ETHYLHEXANOATE, HYDROGENATED COCO-GLYCERIDES, OZOKERITE, POLYGLYCERYL-2 TRIISOSTEARATE, C20-40 ALCOHOLS, EUPHORBIA CERIFERA (CANDELILLA) WAX/CANDELILLA CERA/CIRE DE CANDELILLA, ZINC STEARATE, MICROCRYSTALLINE WAX/CERA MICROCRISTALLINA/CIRE MICROCRYSTALLINE, DIMETHICONE, SORBITAN TRISTEARATE, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, GLYCERYL CAPRYLATE. MAY CONTAIN / PEUT CONTENIR (+/-): MICA, TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891), IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, 77492, 77499), FERRIC AMMONIUM FERROCYANIDE (CI 77510).

Price: HIGHLY depends on where you’re purchasing it from. The official store price is MYR 48 (as of the date of this published post). I’ve seen it priced at 50 and 53 as well (online). When I initially purchased it I got it for MYR 40.50 (10% discount).

Where to buy:
NYX official stores (IOI City Mall Putrajaya, Sunway Pyramid, MidValley Megamall, SOGO KL, Fahrenheit 88, Suria KLCC) and online at Hermo, Shoppee and Lazada (although they’re, more often than not, sold out).

Attaching a YouTube video of mine using the product. Oh yeah! This is a new video! 🙂

Pros:
> Easy to use because of the thin brow pencil design.
> Precision and ability to create brow-like strokes due to tiny product tip.
> No need to sharpen.
> Long wearing.
> Colour perfect for warm, dark tanned skin tones (and with so many shades, anyone is sure to find a match).
> Blends well.
> Not too pigmented which is a pro for a brow pencil because it is more forgiving. A mess-up wouldn’t as difficult to fix as using a highly pigmented product. For perspective, imagine using a gel eyeliner for your brows.

Cons
> It is a measly amount of product for MYR 48 (or even 40.50 for that matter)!!!
> The twisting mechanism is very flimsy and it’s not just mine. Even the testers and a friend’s product does that.
> Although long lasting I have other products that out-perform this (click here to see which one).

Rating: 7.6/10
Although it performs very well and is kind of foolproof to use, the price per amount of product and the fact that I have cheaper alternative that out-performs this, made me give it the lower rating.

So yes, you NEED a microbrow or a brow pencil with a tiny tip but IMHO this NYX is NOT really the best out there.

NYX HD Studio Photogenic Concealer Review (CW 07)

I love NYX Cosmetics!!! It’s too bad that Sephora Malaysia doesn’t carry the brand anymore and since it was only sold in Sephora in Penang, I don’t have access to the brand unless I travel to KL… That’s supposedly easily remedied; online shopping. Unfortunately I hate online shopping. I digress…

The product.
Shade name and code.
Ingredients list.
Comes with a doe-foot applicator.
Swatch. Ignore the blurred out swatch. That was for another review. It looks darker than my skin tone here but on my face it blends in pretty well. Especially with the powder I typically use to set it with…

Description: Concealer that comes in 0.11 oz. or 3 grams of product.

Ingredients:
WATER/AQUA/EAU, TRIMETHYLSILOXYPHENYL DIMETHICONE, TRIMETHYLSILOXYSILICATE, GLYCERIN, SILICA, ISONONYL ISONONANOATE, SORBITAN OLIVATE, CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, COCOS NUCIFERA (COCONUT) OIL, ALOE BARBADENSIS LEAF EXTRACT, TOCOPHERYL ACETATE, TRIETHOXYCAPRYLYLSILANE, EUPHORBIA CERIFERA (CANDELILLA) WAX/CANDELILLA CERA/CIRE DE CANDELILLA, XANTHAN GUM, ALUMINA, CAPRYLYL GLYCOL, PHENOXYETHANOL. MAY CONTAIN / PEUT CONTENIR (+/-): TITANIUM DIOXIDE (CI 77891), IRON OXIDES (CI 77491, CI 77492, CI 77499), MANGANESE VIOLET (CI 77742), ULTRAMARINES (CI 77007), CHROMIUM HYDROXIDE GREEN (CI 77289), CHROMIUM OXIDE GREENS (CI 77288), YELLOW 5 LAKE (CI 19140)

Where to buy: Limited stores available (check out their Facebook page https://www.facebook.com/nyxcosmeticsmalaysia/) and online (Shopee and Hermo are two options).

Price: HIGHLY depends on where you’re buying. I would HIGHLY recommend you purchase from the NYX Stores in Kuala Lumpur because they carry 12 shades (not quite enough but I guess it’ll have to work) and it’s priced at MYR 26.
Shopee (MYR 29), Lazada (MYR 20.80); both online stores only carry 3 or 4 light shades. I purchased mine from Sephora (redundant at the moment but it cost me MYR 20.80; original price MYR 28).

Wear test…

Freshly applied. Again, ignore the blurred half, that’s for another review… 🙂
After about 8 hours of wear. Wasn’t particularly sweating or anything.

Pros:
> Applies smoothly.
> It doesn’t crease (this does depend a tiny bit on the setting powder used).
> Pretty good shade range (there’s 20 shades in total;
just not here in Malaysia, we have 12, AT MOST, here in Malaysia)
> Pigmented and opaque.
> No caking even when layered.
> As evident, very long lasting!

Cons:
> No more easily available here in Malaysia (and the online options are SO limited).
> The product separates a little when in the tube so I have to vigorously shake it up every time I want to use it (hoping this is just my first tube).
> You get only 3 grams of product for the price so I’d consider it not entirely affordable (WOW, I’m such a cheapo!).

Rating: 9.2/10
I love this concealer but I do wish it was more accessible here in Malaysia. I love it so much that I got backup when it was on sale.
